Wow, just wow. Words can't express how much I enjoyed watching this, this game had to be one of the most beautiful and emotional games I've ever seen. As someone who struggles with severe depression, ptsd and has attempted suicide many times this truly struck a cord. I was actually in tears at the end, bravo devs and thank you insym for an amazing watch 👏👏👏👏
Thank you SO much for uploading this, and for playing it in the first place. It's my favorite horror game of all time. The storytelling is beautiful and I think it was brilliant to portray it mainly through the father's eyes because in my opinion he is motivated by fear throughout the entire storyline, making it a perfect fit for the horror genre. Although the environments portray a very specific place and era in time, the message of the story is universal. And the soundtrack is sick as well. I hope the developers take heart and continue making games in the future even though this game was hit with controversy, because they are seriously talented!!
Some times ago I saw about a half of the game by another youtuber. Sadly I missed a huge part of Insyms stream. And now, when I saw all the game. Man… You know now about the beginning (where is Mei Shin). I read some comments about some facts and explenations of the game. It is very dark. (Mei beeing placed in snake wine for 7 days for her cure, Mei called her father (baba) many times during his praying and wandering around. He killed himself ath the end and his soul is wandering in their house so you dont see a reflections or shadows. And lot more)
I tried to gift you this game a while ago, but red candle website did not have a "gift code" and refunded me. I wanted to see you play this game in a long time. Time to chill on the couch 🍿
I'm very glad to see you played Devotion! It's absolutely one of my favourite horror game and sometimes rewatching from Jacksepticeye and now imma enjoy yours! 🥰
The writing and story-telling of this game is top-notch and extremely real to the world at time and even present, a lot of religious culture is dead-on accurate. As an Asian watcher who shares part of the same culture, this really got me startled seeing our religious being presented to everyone. Which was when you said "I suddenly be reminded of my own tounge" is exactly how the religion really told us deep about it, I'm glad we all share the same view to at least a sign of understand about it even not knowing much.
Still a great game and glad you check this game hoping others people see it too.
For added context for those who don't really understand SEA/chinese cultures: Asians, especially the older generation, still see mental health as taboo. They are (or at least, the majority) are superstitious. They relate disturbed mentality to supernatural occurrences such as possession etc. ((I'm of chinese heritage and have told my parents about my own mental concerns. The first thing they said was that there may be an evil presence haunting me lol I'd be happier having a Casper friend that be alone with my own mind))
Due to the strong superstitious nature of SEAs, many fake shamans/con artists use this to their advantage. You also hear many stories of supposed real shamans that use their power for evil instead of good. Devotion is a good portrayal of both. The spiritual mentor was using the Du family for monetary gain. But in doing so, the spiritual mentor may have dabbled too deep/gone too far, causing the father to end up praying to an evil deity, which may have caused his death (basically it's believed that evil deities disguise themselves as good ones and make believers fall for the false followings and then taking their soul, strengthening the evil deity). The spiritual mentor may also be indebted to the evil deity, therefore collecting unsuspecting victims for the evil deity. In a lot of Asian religions, praying gives more strength to whatever deity (good or evil) that is being prayed to. Another belief is that children are considered to be "pure souls", hence being very high on the target chain for evil deities.
During filming of movies/tv shows and game dev of supernatural genre in SEA entertainment, prayers are often conducted before beginning to appease the deities and spirits present in the area. These media also go through a lot of effort to change the names of deities and rituals etc so as not to anger any spirits/deities. They even go so far as to consult shamans/sifus and even have them on set should anything go wrong.
If anyone is interested, The Rope Curse movie series is another wonderful showcase of Taiwanese/Chinese (religious) culture. I think there are some behind the scenes clips explaining how much effort and care they took when filming.
Red Candle is amazing, while the issues on mental health stigma is blatant the other main focus of the cults in Taiwan is sad in how they manipulate people. But the US has a cult issue as well just not as bad.

16.05.2023Awesome game and great way of bringing up a major problem with how the subject is viewed. It’s still taboo in most of the world these days.
