I did not like the ending at all, all that anticipation and then it just ends when you get in the chamber. Like yea its eerie and creepy but you have to do all that shit basically for nothing
I think all the out-of-game puzzle solving nonsense is pretty dumb, especially given that a) once it's solved, like… what's the point? and b) MAJORITY of the game by playtime is in all that hidden stuff. I think the point would have been better served by clues hidden in-game.
Further… yeah, just saying "I'm trying to make this game bring back the dead" is hokey and dumb, and to have the payoff for ALL that possible real-world "hunting" around for shit just to be a pretend pay-off for that silly premise? I mean, more power to the dev, I've certainly never produced anything, let alone anything that could actually spark anyone's interest enough to stand up and search around Belgium for a silly clue.
Any actual scariness of the game is 100% chalked up to the music. Each step of the way had genuine creepy tracks that fit the mood. Good job, music guy!
I mean why would the dev put the raising the dead shit if you lift the game as it is without releasing anything after that lamppost photo people would still be speculating about what could that means and the game would’ve preserved it creepiness
this infatuation with VHSs really downgrades this game for me. We had that whole meme with JonTron poking fun at a video game on a cassette type a while ago, why did the creator think that a VHS could get ahold of an online server after all these years?
To reach the true ending of this game you have to do some serious digging! Here’s a how you get all the relevant info:
*Spoilers Ahead*
First play the game. You can get the original ending by returning the third flag or you can get the hidden ending by exiting when the dev tells you to, then returning to the game collecting the flags and shooting the dev’s eye when it turns up (as seen in the vid above).
Either one of those endings gets you booted from the servers so you need to enter the Konami Code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) to get them up and running again. Now exit the game, here’s where it gets interesting…
You can actually email the “dev” at john.mullard@yahoo.com and you’ll get an automated response which links to his website https://johnmullard.itch.io/eye containing a new game to play called eye.exe. (the playthough of that starts at 08:25 in the video above).
After playing through eye.exe a creepy VHS video plays which has a poem in it with one word blanked out. That word is “haunt”, which comes in handy for the main game.
Now you need to load up No Players Online again and in the server screen you type the word “haunt”. This brings you to a secret screen where you need to type the code “25467” (found via the dev’s tip here https://papercookies.itch.io/no-players-online/devlog/109311/complete-save-file ). This removes the mesh from the middle of the map and allows you to fall down it.
Now you just need to enter the code “19 14 21” on the center console to access the true ending. This code can be found by digging around in the game files of the Linux version of the game, but a legitimate way of finding it still has to be found. There are a few clues though…
Also, the website for “John’s” game dev company is offline but if you look up the WHOIS record for the website http://whois.domaintools.com/enuitltdgames.com you’ll notice that certain letters are capitalised EnUitLtdGames.com (GLUE?) and “Enuit” is an anagram for “Unite” and Enuit Ltd is an anagram for “Untitled”.
God knows how much deeper this thing goes and there are probably a few red herrings thrown in there. Fingers crossed for a v3.0 update!

“John Mullard” has a couple of bandcamp pages with some intriguing tracks one seems to contain a morse code message that includes the phrase “Key:Dog”:

https://johnmullard.bandcamp.com/album/to-see-noun
